Prof. Kechang Xie,   Committee Member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Vice Chairman of China Association of Science and Technology, Deputy Director General of the Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Education, Director of Key Lab of Coal Science and Technology of the Ministry of Education, Professor of Taiyuan University of Technology, and Adjunct Professor of Tsinghua University. His former positions include Standing Committee Member of the National People’s Congress, Vice President of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Deputy Director General of the Standing Committee of Shanxi Provincial People’s Congress, President of Taiyuan University of Technology, etc. He has worked in the research, development, teaching and strategic planning of coal chemical engineering and clean and efficient coal utilization. In 2003, he was elected the first academician in this research area in China. He was then elected Foreign Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering in 2013, who has been recognized as a pioneer in China’s coal chemical science and technology.

He worked as Chief Scientist for two consecutive “973” projects in energy,  proposing the process of polygeneration applications using coal gasification gas and pyrolysis coal gas to produce synthesis gas and directing the engineering demonstration. He advocated and facilitated the legislation and application of the “Low-Carbon Utilization of High-Carbon Energy”. He led and completed important consulting projects such as China Academy of Engineering’s “China Coal Clean and Efficient Sustainable Development and Utilization Strategy Research”, “China Unconventional Natural Gas Development and Utilization Strategy Research”, and “Energy Golden Triangle Development Strategy Research”. He is now leading other major consulting projects including “Driving Energy Production and Consumption Revolution”, “Energy Professional Knowledge Service System Establishment Sub-Project of China Engineering Science and Technology Knowledge Center Establishment Project, etc. He led and completed more than 20 provincial and ministerial level above R&D projects. He taught and guided more than 60 doctoral degree holders and 6 post-doctoral researchers in energy and chemical area. As primary accomplisher, he was awarded one 2nd Prize of National Natural Science Award, one 2nd Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, and seven 1st Prizes of provincial and ministerial science and technology progress awards. He owned more than 40 patents. He published 7 academic works, 12 books of Modern Coal Chemical Technology Collection, and more than 700 articles written independently and jointly.
